2. Stitching: check the handle attachment, not the side seams

Side seams almost never fail in the field. Handles do. On a sample, turn the bag inside out and look at where the handle webbing meets the body. You should see a box-and-X reinforcement stitch: a rectangle with an X sewn across it, usually about 25 mm wide, double-threaded.
